First major tramway expansion in Adelaide SA, Australia See on Google Maps
A high profile project championed by the South Australian Premier, the Glenelg Tramline extension from Victoria Square to the Adelaide Convention Centre was the first major tramway expansion in Adelaide for some time.

Passing through sensitive streetscapes with historic buildings, significant commercial buildings and civic buildings, the route runs through Adelaide’s major city streets, King William Street and North Terrace.

CURRENT STATUS

The project was satisfactorily completed within the required timeframe and budget. It received positive political, media and community feedback and exposure. It achieved high levels of satisfaction from the hotels, businesses and churches along the route due to the unexpected short-term inconvenience.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Location: Adelaide, South Australia.
  • Contract type: Design and construction.
  • Infrastructure: Passing through sensitive streetscapes with historic buildings, significant commercial buildings and civic buildings, the route (1.6 km) runs through Adelaide’s major city streets, King William Street and North Terrace.
  • Project value: AU $22 million.
  • Year of project completion: September 2007

KEY ASPECTS

Following the successful delivery of the Glenelg Tramline Upgrade, Coleman Rail, an ACCIONA company was selected to design, construct and commission the new 1.6km dual track tramline.

The overall design, construction, commissioning, and driver and operator training were conducted over a 38-week period.

Planning involved considerable consultation and liaison with the Adelaide City Council, hotels, churches and businesses along the route to negotiate traffic management, access and alternative parking arrangements, disruptions and road closures, noise control, and the design treatments of structures and finishes. The D&C Contract included the design and complete reconstruction of:

  • 10 km of dual track in ballast, including 9 road crossings and the refurbishment of 12 turnouts.
  • Passenger facilities including 18 tram stops, with raised platforms and 41 pedestrian crossings both with access mazes and ramps to DDA compliant standards.
  • The upgrade of 4 No. 600 VDC converter stations, construction of a new traction power side feeder system and modification of the overheads.
  • Upgrade of the signalling system.
  • Alterations to the maintenance depot to accommodate new light rail vehicles, as well as the old trams, including introduction of retractable overhead maintenance platforms, 600 VDC shore supply and an LRV jacking system.

BENEFITS

  • The project further enhanced Coleman Rail’s project planning and project management capabilities.
  • It also exposed a young team of Construction Managers, Project Engineers and Construction Supervisors to a high profile and complex construction project, further developing their skills and capabilities.
