- Saving: The agreement includes the installation of seven photovoltaic plants that will reduce annual electricity consumption by more than 14%
- Digitization: ACCIONA Energía will provide an integrated system of sensors and Internet of Things technologies for the remote monitoring and management of the energy services
The shopping mall owner and operator Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW) has selected ACCIONA Energía for the supply of 100% renewable energy and the integral management of the energy services of seven of its shopping centers in Spain for the next 15 years.
Under this agreement, which can be extended every five years, ACCIONA Energía will guarantee the supply of renewable electricity from its assets in Spain. In addition, it will implement an energy efficiency project that includes the digitization and remote management of the energy services, an assessment of the current situation of each shopping mall, the renovation and optimization of their energy assets, and the maintenance services for the facilities.
ACCIONA Energía proposed a set of actions to improve energy efficiency in the shopping centers, such as the installation of more than 40,000m2 of photovoltaic panels that will allow the malls to be energy self-sufficient. Moreover, it will integrate a system of sensors and Internet of Things technologies that will unify all energy services in a single remote and smart management platform. URW will monitor in detail and in real time the energy consumption of its centers through this digital panel that will be communicated with the control center 24/7. This will allow to avoid any unjustified energy losses and implement new measures to further reduce consumption and increase efficiency.
ACCIONA Energía’s proposed measures will reduce the annual electricity consumption of the shopping centers involved by more than 14%. Furthermore, they will also bring URW closer to its corporate decarbonization goals, which include a 30% reduction in the consumption of its shopping centers and a six-fold increase in its renewable energy capacity since 2015. These targets, which are part of the company's "Better Places 2030" strategy were initially set for 2030. However, with these new measures, they could be reached in 2023, enabling URW to be certified to the world's most widely used corporate energy management standard ISO 50.001.
URW is thus contributing to boost the energy transition and improving the energy efficiency of its shopping centers, while reducing energy costs and carbon footprint.
ACCIONA Energía is consolidating its position as URW's strategic partner for decarbonization, reinforcing its leadership in innovation and sustainability.
