Madrid City Council has awarded the ACCIONA-Ferrovial joint-venture the contract to enclose underground the section of the M-30 ring-road under the former Vicente Calderón stadium.

The works will consist of enclosing this section of Calle 30 underground, included in the scope of the “Nuevo Mahou-Calderón” project, in the Arganzuela district of the city to improve mobility and accessibility and its integration with the area’s open spaces as part of the Madrid-Río project.

The project involves covering 620 metres of the M-30 ring road that runs under the former stands of the Vicente Calderón stadium. The works will start in September 2021 and will last for 20 months.

The contracted companies will construct a cut-and-cover tunnel that will provide continuity to the existing tunnels. This will require construction of pile-supported containment walls covered by pre-cast girders and in situ slabs. They must also integrate a junction with the M 30.

The construction work, which will take place along the left bank of the Manzanares River, will allow the M-30 to continue operating at all times and in both directions by using a temporary diversion constructed to enable the stadium to be demolished.
