  • Once it starts operations in 2028, this project will entail the creation of a new 220kV power transmission corridor with 300MVA of capacity

ACCIONA has reached an agreement with Darby International Capital for the acquisition of the Machupichu-Quencoro-Onocora-Tintaya transmission line project concession and its related substations.

The project, which involves an investment of €250 million, comprises the design, financing, construction, operation and maintenance for 30 years of a 330-kilometer-long 220kV line, as well as the construction of two new substations (Quencoro Nueva and Onocora) and the expansion of three existing substations (Suriray, Quencoro and Tintaya Nueva).

Once it starts operations in 2028, this project will entail the creation of a new 220kV power transmission corridor with 300MVA of capacity, which will increase the transmission of electricity to the south of Peru, covering the city of Cusco’s entire demand, of which only a part is met currently.

Additionally, it will improve the reliability of the existing transmission systems in the southeastern area of Peru’s National Interconnected Electrical System (SEIN), providing two new substations that will reduce the region’s current overload and congestion problems and will also allow the connection of future renewable energy generation plants.

VAST EXPERIENCE

In Peru, ACCIONA is currently developing eight transmission projects under concessions, including the design, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of 1,200 kilometers of power lines, 14 new substations and 17 expansions of existing substations.

In 2024, ACCIONA reached an agreement with Darby International Capital to acquire its high-voltage transmission line business in Peru, a transaction that positioned ACCIONA as one of the leading operators in the sector in Latin America. The deal included the incorporation of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and operation and maintenance (O&M) teams with experience in managing more than 4,200 kilometers of transmission lines and 30 substations.

In Australia, ACCIONA, in alliance with Genus, was also selected in 2023 to carry out the construction of the eastern section of the HumeLink power transmission line in New South Wales. The project includes the design and construction of 237 kilometers of overhead transmission lines and the upgrade of a 500kV substation, with an investment budget of AU$1.4 billion (€850 million).

Also in Australia, ACCIONA and its partners reached the commercial and financial close with EnergyCo to design, finance, build and operate the transmission network in the Renewable Energy Zone of Central West Orana (CWO). The new infrastructure will create 5,000 jobs during the construction phase.

ACCIONA has more than twenty years of experience in the financing, design and construction of transmission grids of different sizes, from low-voltage facilities to power lines and substations, both in Spain and in countries such as Kenya, Mexico and Peru.
