- ACCIONA will supply around 5,000 MWh of electricity certified as of 100% Renewable Origin, avoiding the emission of 1,046 tonnes of CO2 per year
ACCIONA has signed a contract with the public transport entity of the city of Porto, STCP (Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto) for the supply of 100% renewable electricity.
Under the contract, the installations of the biggest road transport operator in the city, as well as the company’s management systems and electric vehicle fleet, will be supplied with clean electricity. This will avoid the emission of 1,046 tonnes of CO2 to the atmosphere per year in the area where STCP operates.
The contract stipulates that ACCIONA will supply around 5,000 MWh of electricity certified as of 100% renewable origin, according to the EEGO (issuing body for guarantees of origin) of the REN (National Grid) platform. With this contract, ACCIONA becomes the first supplier to certify -in the EEGO- that all the energy supplied to all its clients has a guarantee of being of 100% renewable origin.
STCP has undertaken to reduce its CO2 emissions and develop a sustainable mobility system in the six municipalities where it operates (Porto, Gaia, Gondomar, Maria, Matosinhos and Valongo) by contracting its energy supplies of completely renewable origin.
STCP thus joins more than 50 clients that ACCIONA supplies with 100% renewable energy in Portugal. ACCIONA only sells 100% clean energy and expects to certify all the energy supplied in the new EEGO platform to consolidate itself as the biggest supplier of 100% renewable energy in the Portuguese market.
ACCIONA Energy Division Director in Portugal Alexandre Kisslinger says that “this is a strategic agreement for ACCIONA, due to the fact that we are aware of the importance of a company such as STCP, its vision of the future of public transport in Greater Porto, and the role it has played in creating public awareness around the importance of renewable energies in our economy and society. It is yet another example of our commitment to the implementation of a Green Economy, not only thinking about the present but also the younger generations of the future”.
As well as its marketing activity, ACCIONA has more than 166 MW of renewable energy capacity installed in Portugal, including wind and solar technologies. Its asset portfolio in the country consists of 16 wind farms as well as one of the biggest photovoltaic plants in the Iberian Peninsula: Amareleja, with a capacity of 46 MWp, capable of producing energy to supply 30,000 Portuguese households and avoiding the emission of around 90,000 tonnes of CO2 to the atmosphere per year.
ACCIONA produces more than 10,500 MW of renewable energy worldwide. This year it has been chosen -for the sixth year running- as the most sustainable utility on the planet according to the “New Energy Top 100 Green Utilities” ranking drawn up by Energy Intelligence, an independent consultancy that specialises in energy markets.
The company sells 100% renewable energy to more than 500 companies and institutions around the world, making a major contribution to decarbonization and offsetting climate change. Many clients have placed their trust in ACCIONA in Portugal, among them companies such as Coca-Cola, FNAC, Sonae Arauco, Makro, Vidrala, Bosch, Indorama and Danone, among others.
