IFEMA MADRID and the consortium formed by ACCIONA (60%) and Eiffage Construcción (40%) signed today the contract for the construction of the new Formula 1 circuit (Madring) that the Spanish capital will use from 2026 onwards.
The circuit will be located in the northeast of Madrid, on plots of land mostly belonging to IFEMA MADRID, except for a section of public roads. The project, with a tender budget of €111 million, was awarded to the consortium for €83.2 million. It includes the assembly and dismantling of all the temporary track structures and facilities for the race, as well as the restoration of the public roads that will form part of the circuit for their everyday use once the race is over.
The consortium formed by ACCIONA and Eiffage Construcción plans to start the works on all the permanent structures and elements this April and to complete them by May 2026. The circuit, designed under the Grade 1 standards of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), will be 5,400 meters long, of which 4,100 meters will be within IFEMA MADRID land and 1,300 meters on a section of public roads, thus ensuring the compatibility of everyday use with the works’ execution and minimizing the potential impact on the IFEMA fairground’s operation and traffic.
REDUCED IMPACT
The project will reuse nearly 700,000m3 of earth from road cutting and excavations, and the works’ CO2 emissions will be offset by specific sustainability measures.
During the construction process, ACCIONA and Eiffage Construcción will use HVO for machinery and vehicles, as well as renewable electricity for on-site facilities. HVO is a renewable biofuel generated from vegetable waste oil that reduces CO₂ emissions by 90% compared to conventional fossil fuels, making it an ideal choice for high-tonnage machinery.
In addition, 60% of the total displaced earth and materials will be reused for the project and the remaining 40% will be stored for later use in other works.
ACCIONA has extensive experience in highly complex infrastructure works, including those for sports, such as the Motorland Aragón race track, located in Alcañiz (Teruel, Spain), which can host top-level racecar and motorcycle events, and the test center for Nokian Tyres, a leading Scandinavian tire manufacturer, located in Santa Cruz de la Zarza (Toledo, Spain).
Eiffage Construcción is a construction company with more than 50 years of experience in Spain. It has a solid business structure that leads Spain’s manufacture and supply of aggregates, concrete and bituminous mixtures. It operates the most modern and sustainable asphalt factory in the country, just 12 kilometers away from the project. The company has vast experience in the construction of motorsport circuits, such as the asphalting of the Jerez circuit (for the 2009 MotoGP Grand Prix) or the asphalting of Spain’s third largest race track in Carmona (Seville).
