ACCIONA, as part of the Nexus Infrastructure consortium, today signed contracts with the Queensland Government achieving contractual close for the delivery of the A$1.6 billion Toowoomba Second Range Crossing.
Nexus will design construct, finance, operate and maintain the 41km highway that will bypass the city of Toowoomba and improve traffic conditions and road safety in the region, in particular reducing the number of heavy vehicles travelling through Toowoomba’s city centre.
The Nexus consortium brings together global leaders in road construction and social infrastructure and includes ACCIONA, Ferrovial, Plenary Group and Transfield Services. The consortium’s successful bid underscored its commitment to support local employment and the local supply chain.
Work on the project will start with detailed design, procurement and site establishment in the coming months with actual construction works expected soon after. Construction is expected to be complete in late 2018 after which Nexus is contracted to operate and maintain the road for 25 years.
Nexus will now work closely with the Queensland Government to deliver the project on time and on budget.
The Toowoomba bypass project consolidates ACCIONA’s business in Australia in renewable energy, infrastructure and water. he Spain-based multinational has invested more than A$650 million in renewable energy projects in Australia and is currently executing road and rail projects valued at A$4.2 billion.
ACCIONA recently opened to traffic the A$1.5 billion Legacy Way tunnel in Brisbane as part of the Transcity consortium. Its construction broke daily, weekly and monthly world tunnelling records and won a number of accolades and awards. ACCIONA Australia also won the prestigious Lord Mayor’s 2012 Award for Business Innovation, in recognition of its technical excellence.
