- The ACCIONA consortium will carry out three projects - worth 153 million euros - to expand the existing station and redevelop the urban area around it
ACCIONA, in consortium with Copcisa, has been awarded the first three projects for the complete transformation of Barcelona Sants railway station. The projects, worth more than 153 million euros, include the enlargement of the station, the renovation of the Plaça dels Països Catalans and the adaptation of access points.
Thanks to these projects, the connection between the railway station and the bus station will be significantly improved, making it possible to accommodate a greater number of passengers, increase the area allocated to regional commuter trains (Cercanías), improve the sustainability and accessibility of the building, and pedestrianize the entire perimeter of the station. Work is scheduled to begin later this year.
ENLARGEMENT OF THE STATION
The first project involves the enlargement of the station on the Plaça de los Països Catalans side, with a new high-speed concourse, office space and a new access to the Cercanías service to accommodate the increase in passengers. There will be a new access from the plaza to the Rodalies (main commuter and regional train system in Catalonia) concourse to organize the flow of departures and create a new area for visitors to stay, travel and shop.
The surface area of the station will increase by more than 30%, increasing the space dedicated to railway uses and Rodalies long-distance and high-speed passengers. Three new communication cores will be built with the high-speed platforms and three upper levels with boarding area and direct access to the platforms, new waiting rooms for high-speed passengers and technical areas for internal use.
It is also planned to open two new access points on the sea and mountain sides of the station, creating a new multimodal axis that will connect passengers from the bus and metro station to the high-speed and Rodalies concourses.
PLAÇA DELS PAÏSOS CATALANS
The second project focuses on the rehabilitation of the Plaça dels Països Catalans to restore its original design. The project includes the adaptation of the children’s play areas, the incorporation of new green spaces and rest areas.
In addition to the intervention on the 9,600 m2 of the plaza, ACCIONA and its partners will pedestrianize the existing road for vehicles, turning it into an extension of the public space. In this way, the plaza will be linked to the new extension of the first phase, favoring pedestrian access for passengers along this front.
REDEVELOPMENT OF THE URBAN SPACE
The third project involves the redevelopment of 8,500m2 close to the multimodal terminal, both pedestrian and road.
On the façade acing the mountain, a new pedestrian route will connect Plaça dels Països Catalans and Plaça Joan Peiró, providing access from the bus station to the passenger building. The kiss&train space for private cars, taxis and city buses will be moved to the seafront in coordination with the new road defined by the Barcelona City Council.
