IMPACT: The project will be key to the development of the offshore wind industry in the region.
The Orkney Islands Council, in the north of Scotland, has awarded ACCIONA (70%) and local firm Jones Bros (30%) a contract for the initial study and potential development (ECI-Early Contractor Involvement) of a multipurpose port facility at Scapa. The project includes more than 600 meters of quay length and a depth of between 15 and 20 meters, as well as an access road from the A961 motorway to the port.
During the first phase of the project, progress will be made on the design of the quay, the adjacent esplanade, dredging in the berthing area and earthworks, with the aim of establishing the budget for the future works, which, once approved, could amount to more than €200 million.
Located on the eastern shore of Scapa Flow, one of the largest natural deep-water harbors in Northern Europe, the facility will have deep-draft facilities capable of accommodating the large vessels required for the development of the offshore wind industry, which is so important in the area.
In addition, the quay will provide the optimal location to become a leading center for the construction and assembly of foundations and wind turbines, both fixed and floating. The infrastructure will also serve as a facility for any industry requiring deep water and large berths.
The innovative and environmentally friendly design of the project will allow the project to be built in the most sustainable way possible, including the maximum reuse of excavated material, which will be used to create the new seaward esplanade.
The solution developed by ACCIONA is based on prefabrication, which will minimize activity in this area of environmental value.
