  • This award recognises the measures put in place to improve air quality inside the trams and the innovative air purification studies.

The Zaragoza Tramway, currently operated by a consortium that includes ACCIONA, has received an award at the Global Light Rail Awards in London in the “Significant Safety Initiative” category. These awards are highly regarded in the sector internationally.

The award recognises the measures put in place jointly by ACCIONA, Zaragoza City Council and Tranvías de Zaragoza to improve air quality inside the tram carriages, as well as for the innovative studies carried out with the University of Zaragoza and the Aragón Healthcare Research Institute (IISA) in relation to the air purification system.

This award sits alongside the one received at the 2020 edition in the “Best Customer Initiative” category, which recognised all of the measures implemented to tackle COVID-19.

In 2009, ACCIONA was awarded the contract to finance, design and construct Zaragoza’s first tram line, and to operate and maintain it for a 35 year period. This 12.8 km line runs between Parque Goya in the northern part of the city and the neighbourhood of Valdespartera in the south. It crosses Zaragoza’s historical centre on a catenary-free section and has a total of 25 stations and 21 trams, each one 32 metres long.

Construction of the tram line was completed in 2013 and since then, ACCIONA and its partners have been responsible for operating and maintaining it, helping to implement these types of measures that ensure a quality and safe service for all users.
