ACCIONA has celebrated the breakthrough in the Carlberg tunnel- included in the Moss railway (Norway)- achieving an important milestone for this railway project, allowing the entrance of light from the southern end of the tunnel.
To celebrate the 2.1 meters of the tunnel breakthrough- which has been excavated using traditional methods such as drilling and blasting- MossIA and Bane NOR have gathered project workers and community representatives.
At Carlberg, tunnel work started in February 2020 and the last blast towards the city center was fired at the end of 2022. At present, 60% of the Carlberg tunnel lining has been cast.
THE PROJECT
ACCIONA and Implenia were adjudicated the design and construction of 9 of the 10 kilometers of the Sandbukta - Moss - Såstad (SMS2A) project for Bane NOR. The main objective of the project is to increase the capacity and reduce the travel time in the Østfold line.
The new double-track railway crosses the municipality of Moss and requires the construction of two main tunnels: the Mossetunnel, of 2.7 Km, located at the north, and the Carlbergtunnel, of 2.3 Km, located at the south. Together with them, the escape tunnel of Mossetunnel and a parallel escape tunnel in the Carlberg tunnel are also being developed.
The project forms part of the Bane NOR’s Intercity program, which is aimed to improve the connections between the country’s main cities while decongesting traffic in the area of influence of the capital, Oslo
