- The infrastructure will support the export of critical minerals including lithium and copper concentrates and the imports of renewable energy infrastructure
Pilbara Ports in Western Australia has awarded ACCIONA a contract to build two wharves as part of the Lumsden Point development project in Port Hedland, the Pilbara region’s second most populous town.
The multi-user development will aid the export of critical minerals such as lithium and copper concentrates from nearby mines, the imports of renewable energy infrastructure, including wind turbines and blades, and support rapid growth of direct shipping services to the Pilbara.
ACCIONA has extensive experience in port works such as the construction of a breakwater to protect the new floating terminal for industrial uses at the Port of Ravenna (Italy), the recently awarded container terminal for the northern extension of the Port of Valencia, the second phase of the new container terminal at the Port of Cadiz, the extension of the adjacent quay at the Port of Barcelona, the construction of the Port of Ferrol and the Port of Açu (Brazil). ACCIONA has designed and built nearly 60 ports around the world.
LOCAL LEADERSHIP
ACCIONA was established in Australia in 2002 and has become one of the country’s leading infrastructure companies.
In 2009, the company was awarded one of its most emblematic projects in Australia, the Adelaide desalination plant. The plant, with a capacity of 300,000 m³ per day, was a pioneer in the country, incorporating advanced pre-treatment to improve energy efficiency and increase the recovery of treated water for human consumption. In 2011, ACCIONA was awarded its first water project in Western Australia, consisting of the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the Mundaring water treatment plant, which supplies water to the Goldfields, one of the state’s nine regions.
Other major projects in the country include the design, construction and ten-year operation and maintenance of the Alkimos desalination plant in Perth; the construction of the eastern section of the HumeLink electricity transmission line in New South Wales; and the design and construction of the Western Harbour Tunnel, valued at around AU$4.24 billion (€2.746 billion), the largest construction contract in ACCIONA's history.
Other major contracts in the country include the completion of the runway at the new Western Sydney International Airport (Nancy Bird Walton); the central section of Sydney’s Metro West, the new underground railway that runs through much of the country’s largest city; and the removal of level crossings on the Frankston, Hurtsbridge and Werribee railway lines in Melbourne.
