Energy storage technologies are essential to achieving a system based entirely on renewable energies, allowing us to halt global warming and implement a fully sustainable energy model.
At ACCIONA, we have led pioneering initiatives, such as the first wind power storage plant using batteries in Spain, located in Barásoain (Navarre) since 2017, and the country’s first industrial green hydrogen generation plant, which opened in 2022 on the island of Mallorca.
We have recently started operating the largest stationary battery in Texas (USA), to provide services to the electricity grid, and we have a portfolio of projects under development in the country which will provide more than 1GW of capacity.
We also have a reversible hydroelectric plant located in Canfranc Station (Huesca, Spain), which is a great example of how to store renewable energy through a hydraulic pumping system, currently the most mature and prolific option for storing clean energy.
More information about our energy storage activity is available on the ACCIONA Energía website.
The hydroelectric pumping station at Ip, built and operated by ACCIONA, stores clean energy ready for release when needed through a through a high-pressure gallery and pipework with a head of over 900 metres
Renewable energies are increasingly gaining momentum, but so far they were being hampered by a lack of consistent supply, mainly those relying on solar and wind power. Initiatives such as ACCIONA’s new Hybrid Storage Plant in Navarre (Spain) or Tesla’s endeavor in Australia will bolster this new sustainable energy model.
