Built between 2002 and 2008, the tunnel was the sixth longest in the world.

The $780-million project consisted of the construction of a railway line for trains with a speed of 350 km/h, including two tunnels of 15 km and 13 km in length and 8.50 m inner diameter with connecting tunnels every 250 m.

Half of each tunnel tube was excavated using two double-shield TBMs.

The project includes infrastructure, superstructure, civil works for railway installations, replacement of utilities and services, environmental integration, non-railway installations and ancillary works.
