Located approximately 6 kilometers east of Bow Island, in the County of Forty Mile No. 8, the Forty Mile Wind Farm is ACCIONA Energía’s fifth project in Canada and, once complete, it will be the company’s largest in North America and among the ten biggest in the country.
The project, which is expected to be fully operational by spring 2025, will generate enough clean energy to power more than 85,000 homes.
This installation consists of 49 Nordex wind turbines, each with a capacity of 5.7 MW and a tower height of 108 meters. Phase I of the project, with 280 MW is currently nearing completion. A Phase II with an additional 120 MW may follow up.
ACCIONA Energía is collaborating closely with stakeholders, including local governmental agencies and landowners, to ensure smooth development and maximize the project’s positive impact on the community.

The project falls under ACCIONA Energía’s Social Impact Management (SIM) program, which re-invests a portion of the project’s annual revenues to support the local community. For example, the company provides direct financial support to local non-profit organizations providing services to the communities close to the project. Those include: the Forty Mile Family & Community Support Services; the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society; and the Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub.
- Forty Mile Wind Farm began supplying renewable electricity to the province’s power grid in October 2024.
