ACCIONA, together with Plenary Americas and Sacyr, is carrying out an ambitious infrastructure project in the United States: the design, build, financing, operation and maintenance for 50 years of the Calcasieu River Bridge, part of the Interstate Highway (I-10) linking the cities of Lake Charles and Westlake.

The project, awarded by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, is valued at US$2.1 billion (€1.9 billion).

The current bridge, which is more than 70 years old, is being replaced due to its obsolescence and limited capacity. The new infrastructure will include a six-lane interstate highway, auxiliary structures and a free-flow toll system, providing a modern and efficient solution for the region’s daily traffic. In addition, the project is being designed as the first climate resilience and green financing project in the country, and will be built using environmentally friendly technologies to minimize the impact on the Lake Charles area.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2031. Once completed, the new infrastructure will serve an average daily traffic of more than 90,000 vehicles by 2040, helping to reduce congestion and improve travel times on a critical roadway for the Louisiana region and the national interstate highway network.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Location: Louisiana, United States.
  • Type of contract: Design, build, finance, operate and maintain.
  • Infrastructure: Six-lane interstate highway bridge, including several auxiliary structures, the implementation of a free-flow toll system and the removal of the existing bridge.
  • Year of completion: 2031

The project, one of the largest infrastructure contracts in North America, aims to minimize its environmental impact and preserve the heritage of the historic bridge. The final design will be developed in cooperation with the state government and the local community, recognizing the importance of this busy, historic crossing that currently carries more than 70,000 cars and trucks per day.
