The rise in temperature, exacerbated by human activity, negatively impacts people’s lives, ecosystems, and the economy. Rising sea levels, warming oceans, desertification harming crops, and worsening water scarcity all contribute to a bleak outlook for progress in the most disadvantaged regions. These effects are all interconnected.

Climate change represents the greatest challenge to the future of life on Earth as we know it. Since 1990, CO₂ emissions have increased by around 50%, contributing to global temperature rise and jeopardising the Paris Agreement’s target of keeping global warming below 2°C.

At ACCIONA, the fight against climate change and its consequences is at the forefront of our priorities. Our determination to lead the transition to a carbon-neutral economy from the private sector drives us to adopt a new way of doing business. This approach prioritises the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to contribute to societal progress and protect the planet. Our efforts are supported by the key pillars of energy, water, and infrastructure.

The Business as Unusual label, embedded in every aspect of ACCIONA’s operations, is reflected in one of our most significant achievements in recent years: carbon neutrality. ACCIONA became carbon neutral in 2016, pioneering in all our sectors and becoming one of the world’s first companies to reach this milestone. This was achieved through energy efficiency measures, the purchase of renewable energy, and the voluntary offsetting of 100% of the emissions that could not be reduced, by purchasing emission reduction certificate.

Climate Change Policy RISKS AND OPPORTUNITIES REPORT ACCORDING TO THE TCFD

Global warming is transforming ecosystems and threatening the survival of millions of species, putting biodiversity at risk. Preserving biodiversity is essential for sustainability. To this end, ACCIONA has set a goal to achieve a Neutral Biodiversity Footprint, meaning it aims to prevent any net loss in biodiversity and achieve a positive net impact.

  • 352,596 additional trees planted between 2022 and 2023.

  • ACCIONA participates in recommendations of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD).

The climate emergency severely affects the water cycle, increasing the vulnerability of regions where its impact is most profound. In response, ACCIONA promotes sustainable water management and offers solutions for treating this vital resource to ensure access to clean water, particularly in water-scarce and developing regions.

  • 76.1 hm³ of potable water in 2023.

  • ACCIONA has joined the Forward Faster initiative, committing to key areas such as climate change and promoting water resilience.

Society is moving towards a circular economy model, which is crucial in addressing the climate crisis and the overexploitation of resources. ACCIONA has implemented this model across all its activities, incorporating technologies, processes, strategies, and best practices to minimise resource use and waste generation.

We reduce and recover waste, optimise material usage, and employ sustainable materials. We also encourage resource-sharing platforms, digitise construction, and build and maintain infrastructure designed with resilience in mind, adapting to global warming and extending its useful life.

  • 9 % of renewed or recycled resources consumed.

  • 77 % of waste produced sent for recovery.
